Introduction Channels: 12 Modulation: Spektrum DSM RF Link (2048 resolution) Band: 2.4GHz DSM Servos: No Servos Included Receiver: JR R1221 DSM2 Receiver Programming Features: Aircraft, Helicopter, Sailplane Model Memory: 50 Transmitter Battery: 2000mAh Ni-MH Weight w/Battery: 2lbs 9.6oz Distributor: < Horizon Hobby 2.4GHz transmitters have definitely changed our hobby in a good way. Starting with the Spektrum DX6, we found out what it was like to fly with freedom, no longer having to worry about frequency conflicts. Then the Spektrum DX7 came along and added Model Match so we no longer had to be concerned with the transmitter being set to the wrong model memory. The JR 9303 built on all this and added programming features for helicopters and sailplanes right out of the box. Now we have the 12X, which has become the flagship of the JR line, and wait till you hear what it can do! !So what’s in the box? JR 12X 2.4GHz DSM TransmitterTransmitter CaseAudio cable !Features!!Ultra-fast 2.4GHz DSM2 control response, plus refined 2048 resolution. The extreme low latency of the 12X—a result of JR/Spektrum cooperation and ingenuity—delivers an astonishing sense of connection with your model. It’s a feature that prompted perennial World Championship competitor Quique Somenzini to declare the prototype “unbelievable, amazing!” after only one flight. Also, thanks to another 12X breakthrough, all 12 channels respond to commands with identical speed and perfect synchronization for unprecedented control precision. To top it off, the instantaneous response of the 12X is complemented by the accuracy of JR’s refined 2048 resolution. (2048 resolution only available using 9 channel and higher receivers) !!Exclusive patented ModelMatch™ technology to prevent “wrong model syndrome,” plus a 50-model memory. Here’s how ModelMatch works: If you’re operating on 2.4GHz and your transmitter doesn’t “recognize” your model as the selected model when your airborne system is turned on, there’ll be absolutely no control response. You’ll be alerted that something’s wrong and a costly crash may be averted.* Also, the 12X’s included PC Data Transfer System permits you to upload an unlimited number of model setups from your transmitter to your computer, then access and download any 50 of them to your 12X transmitter’s model memory for use at the field. !!Flight Mode Features * Airplane (Acro Mode)* Up to 5 flight modes* Switch and lever assignability* Triple rates and Exponential* 4 programmable wing types* Aileron differential* V-tail mixing* Dual channels for all primary flight controls and flaps* Adjustable trim rates* Elevator-to-flap mixing* Aileron-to-flap mixing* Aileron-to-rudder mixing* Governor mixing* Balance Mixing* Throttle hold* 2 Throttle curves* Flap system* Gyro system* Servo Speed* 8 Programmable mixes* Programmable trainer system* 3 Timers (Stopwatch, Countdown, Integrated)* Servo monitor* Pitch curve mixing * Helicopter Mode* Switch assignability* Up to 6 fully programmable flight modes* Flight mode naming* Programmable sevo speed* Triple rates/Exponentials* 6 Swashplate Types* Electronic 3D Cyclic Ring* Adjustable trim rates* Aileron to elevator and elevator to aileron mixing* Built-in Cyclic-to-throttle mixing for aileron, elevator, and rudder* Governor mix* Throttle curves (up to 5)* Pitch curves (up to 6)* Gyro system* 8 Programmable mixes* Mix monitor * Sailplane Mode* 5 Programmable flight modes* Dual control functions for elevator, rudder, flap, and spoilers* Tip aileron programming* V-tail mixing* Stick position switches* Fully programmable motor function* Camber programming for each flight mode* Programmable servo speed* Triple rates/Exponentials* Adjustable trim rates* 8 Programmable mixes* Programmable trainer system* 3 Programmable timers* Servo monitor* Mix monitor Compatible Receivers The JR 12X DSM2 transmitter supports more receivers than any other 2.4 GHz radio system from Ultra-Micro to Full-Range 12 Channel, a whopping 18 at the time of this article! * AR500 DSM2 5 Channel Sport Receiver* AR6000 DSM DuaLink 6-Channel Park Flyer Receiver* AR6100 DSM2 MicroLite 6-Channel Receiver* AR6100e DSM2 6-Channel Receiver End Pin* DSM2 AR6200 6-Channel Receiver* AR6250 DSM2 6-Channel Carbon Fuse Rx* AR6300 DSM2 Nanolite 6-Channel Receiver* AR6400 DSM2 6CH Ultra-Micro Receiver/ESC* AR7000 DSM2 7Ch Receiver* AR7100 7-Channel DSM2 Heli Receiver* AR7100R 7-Channel DSM2 Heli Receiver w/RevLimit* AR9000 DSM2 9-Channel Receiver* AR9100 DSM2 9-Channel PowerSafe Receiver* AR9300 DSM2 9-Channel Carbon Fuselage Rx* R921 9 Channel DSM2 Receiver* R922 9 Channel DSM2 Powersafe Receiver* R1221 12 Channel DSM2 Receiver* R1222 12 Channel DSM2 PowerSafe Receiver !!Main Display ScreenThe main display on the 12X provides a lot of information including model number, model name, battery voltage, timer, trim settings and aircraft type. Aircraft type is shown as an image of an aircraft, helicopter, or sailplane. Main Display Screen !!Programming Programming the 12X is done in two modes, System Mode and Function Mode. System Mode is used for settings normally done with a new model such as model select, model name and wing type. System Mode can only be accessed by turning on the transmitter with the ENT button depressed. Function Mode is used to complete setup and fine-tune a model. Examples found in this mode include: dual rate, exponential, sub trim and timer to name a few. Function Mode can be accessed anytime by pressing the LIST button. * System Mode List* Function Mode List* ENT, LIST and CLR Buttons* Rolling Selector Once in System or Function Mode, the Rolling Selector is used to highlight options within the programming. Once you have highlighted the option you want to change or access, you simply press down on the rolling selector. Also the selections in both Modes are numbered. These numbers may be familiar for someone who has used other JR radios. The numbers also help to quickly look up functions in the manual. Programming is very simple and intuitive with programming options being displayed on a single screen. This saves time by not having to scroll through several screens. !!USB PC Data TransferThe included software and USB cable allows you to upload, download, save, change or set up a completely new model via your PC. The Data Transfer functionality also allows users to download setups directly from JR, and users can share files with anyone. In short, the Data Transfer program allows the user to view and modify every feature offered in their transmitter right on their PC screen.A complete manual is available on the software CD in PDF format. PC Requirements !Thoughts and Experiences with the 12X !!Reviewer Overview The magnesium-alloy case felt solid and comfortable in my hands from the first time I picked it up. Stepping up from the DX7, I was amazed at all switches, sliders and knobs comfortably within my grasp. The 12X packs a lot of functionality for aircraft use. The extra channels and flight modes the 12X provides can come in quite handy for anyone from Pattern or IMAC pilots to Jet Jocks and Scale fans. Speaking of switches, if you need a little assistance determining the location of different switches during flight, you can use different sizes or lengths of fuel tubing to slide over them for easy identification simply by feel. The quad-bearing gimbals make stick movements very smooth. Since the 12X is setup to work with airplanes, helicopters and gliders the throttle stick does not have ratcheting. After a couple of flights, I didn’t event miss it. Since I plan to fly all three types of aircraft on the 12X, it makes more sense not to have it. When I first started flying the 12X I was not using the Flight Modes. I have since begun experimenting with them to easily switch all of the rates with one flick of a switch or to specifically tailor the settings for certain flight conditions. It is almost like having additional radio’s setup for certain tasks within the flight. One really nice feature of the 12X is the warning you get if you accidentally turn on the transmitter with the throttle stick anywhere but all the way down. You not only get a persistent beeping, but also an arrow pointing at the throttle stick on the display. The flexibility the JR 12X has provided me has been a huge benefit. The 50 model memory insures I can go to the gym or field with only one radio. All size aircraft can be supported via the Spektrum and JR receiver line from my biplane weighing only a few ounces to my giant-scale aircraft and beyond. I can fly my planes, helicopters and sailplanes with one radio with the room to expand into other segments of RC aircraft. Most importantly, frequency conflicts and wrong model memory mistakes are a thing of the past! Aircraft Dave Lockhart – Team JR pilot, Finalist, US Nationals Pattern F3A 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008. 1st US Nationals Pattern, Masters 1998. !!Dave Lockhart Overview My first radio from JR was a very simple 4 channel sold by Circus Circus Hobbies, circa 1986, and that radio never missed a beat in many years of heavy use. When I became part of Team JR in 1990, I stepped into the world of the ultra high end JR PCM 10, which featured 512-bit resolution and a huge touch screen display. The original PCM 10 was landmark several reasons — ergonomic feel,- breadth of programming options,- simplicity and speed of setup, even when using complex mixing. The US market has seen a progression radios following the original PCM 10 with the 10S, 10SX, 10SXII, and the last 10 channel, the 10X. Throughout that evolution, the solid feel and natural ergonomics of the transmitter never changed. Having flown the “10” for 18 years, when news of the 12X surfaced, I had high expectations for new features, and hoped the ergonomics and programming ease of the “10” lineage would be preserved. Well, upon picking up the 12X, it was clear the ergonomics of the 10X had not been compromised, as the basic shape and dimensions remained unchanged from the 10X. Aside from minor cosmetic updates, the most obvious physical change to the 12X is that the touchscreen interface is gone. Programming is now accomplished with a scroll/click wheel and 4 buttons, which have been well proven on the JR 9303. The majority of switches, levers, sliders, and rotary knobs are identical to the 10X, with several small changes:*the snap/trainer button on the top left front corner has been replaced by a short 3 position switch,*the pair of small 2 position switches for setting snap roll directions on the back of the 10X are gone,*new are additional rotary knobs on each side of the top of the TX (these are channels 11 and 12),*new are a pair of “trim” rockers, one each located on the top outside corners of the gimbals rings. After 5 minutes of surfing through the menus, I knew I could duplicate the programs in my 10X. Anyone familiar with the menu structure and programming logic of the 9303 will easily adapt to the 12X. 10X users will notice the enhanced graphics, familiar screen layouts, and closer inspection will reveal some subtle refinements and some new software features. Owing to the increased resolution of the new display screen, most programming functions can be completed on a single screen, so the familiar shortcut numeric codes are no longer needed for programming. More switch assignments are available on the 12X, and when selecting switch assignments, the switch options are highlighted graphically on the programming screen. The “trim” rockers can be used for a variety of functions including timers, snaps, and trainer switch. One of the minor enhancements on the 12X was introduced on the 9303. When multiple channels are assigned to a single function (such as 2 aileron servos) the master aileron channel (channel 2) is labeled “RAIL” and the 2nd aileron channel (channel 6) is labeled “LAIL”. This is especially useful when setting up servo reversing, subtrims, and travel adjustments on planes with multiple aileron, elevator, and rudder servos. For me, the greatest software addition on the 12X is the “balance” function (code 33). The balance function becomes active anytime 2 channels are assigned to a single flight function (ie, dual rudders, dual elevators, elevons, delta mix, flaperons) or, in the case of ailerons, when 2 or 4 channels are assigned to the aileron function. The balance function is essentially is a multipoint mix that allows the servo outputs to be adjusted across the entire range of throw. Using this function on the ailerons of my F3A pattern planes, I can adjust the aileron differential to be exactly correct at any amount of throw, compensating for any minor differences in servos or linkage geometry. I also used the balance function (and a pair of inline ampmeters) to eliminate minor binding between the two rudder servos on an airplane with a split-rudder. On larger planes, where 2 aileron servos are used on each aileron, the balance function can be used (in place of a matchbox) to eliminate binding of the servos at partial throws. Being a competitive F3A pattern pilot, in a typical year I will put 400+ flights on my primary pattern plane. With that many flights, it becomes pretty easy to feel or sense when something on the plane has changed. After carefully duplicating my 10X program in the 12X, I flew my primary pattern plane back to back with the 10X and 12X. The initial flight with the 12X was a little off, as I had to adjust to the faster response time and tighter control loop of the 12X. However, before the end of the second flight, benefit of the improved control response of the 12X was clearly showing, especially in maneuvers like rapid point rolls and snaps, which all showed improved definition. There is no doubt in my mind that the combination of the JR digital servos, 12X response time, solid construction and 12X servo sync provides the fastest and most precise RF link I have ever flown. Helicopter Scott Gray – Team JR Professional Heli pilot, 2-time World Championships Vice Champion, & XFC ’06 winner !!Scott Gray Overview The heli portion of the new 12X includes everything a professional 3D or F3C pilot could want yet be easily programmed by a novice. JR’s software philosophy is to allow speedy setups while retaining all the functionality needed for the most demanding modelers. The 12X delivers a heli radio that achieves this and more. A closer look at the software and the heli features reveals JR’s attention to detail and ease of use. The heli software is based on the popular and capable JR 9303 and previous top of the line radio, the 10X. All standard features are easy to navigate and modify such as reversing, travel adjust, dual rates and expo. Most users do not ever need to consult the manual since programming is so intuitive and straightforward, a big plus when at the field making quick changes. The best part of the 12X is the silky smooth ball bearing gimbals and solid magnesium case. The quality can be felt before even turning it on. Some of the features that make the 12X stand out are the pitch and throttle curves, CCPM mixing, program mixes, gyro, and governor pages. Here’s what I like about each of these areas: Pitch and Throttle curves: Up to eight curve points can be added and adjusted, but more importantly, you can select user defined points anywhere on the curve and have as few or as many as needed. More often than not, only a few properly placed points are needed, and you’ll never need to modify a pile of points to get the shape you’re looking for- simple and effective. Selected curve points can be moved up/down in real time while flying on your choice of knobs or electronic trim switches. This is a great feature to dial in the feel you want in flight. CCPM Swash Mix: Since most helis these days are CCPM mixing, a radio that does a good job at managing these three servos is very important. This is one area the 12X was really upgraded. The 12X can do 90,120,140 in three and four servo combinations. I particularly like the EXPO setting for CCPM mixing. Activating this recalculates the servo arcs making a more linear output. Another new feature is the E-RING setting which disallows any mechanical binding of the swash plate when cyclic at full elevator and aileron is input. When activated, the e-ring will automatically reduce travels in the “corners” of your cyclic so the swash plate is always tilting at maximum deflection but nothing more. 3D pilots will love this feature for piro flips and chaos since there is no danger of overdriving the swash plate. Finally, an all new elevator pitch canceler allows you to set a value to perfectly match your servos to reduce any for/aft interactions during rapid cyclic movements. Conveniently on the same program page, you can easily alter the swash timing of your heli to correct any flip and roll tendencies you may have. Exclusive to JR/DSM and Spektrum radios is one of the most significant features in years: Servo Sync. Servo Sync keeps all three CCPM servos operating together without any delay from one channel to the next. Collective punch and feel is significantly improved. The speed and resolution of the 12X combined with the fastest servos on the market will yield the most connected and accurate feel a heli pilot could want. 3D pilots will notice a more balanced CCPM system, less interaction and accurate feel on the 12X compared to anything else. Program mix: Among the easiest to setup and program, JR’s program mixes are available in the heli mode to fine tune any flight characteristics of your heli you don’t want. You can now activate mixes automatically on any flight modes, or on any switch of your choice. Gyro and Governor: Simple settings pages for these features are laid out to allow quick mods to the values. Not only that, but simply select the channel that is controlling your gyro or governor, set the values on the ground or in flight and you’re done. Of course, these can be controlled by stunt modes or your favorite switch on the TX. For the scale or electric heli pilot, some features in the 12X will also be appealing. For electric heli pilots, a timer system can be setup to keep time while the throttle stick is above a certain position and pause if on the ground to keep accurate battery life time left. Also now available in the heli mode is a servo speed program where any servo can be set to slower than normal speeds which can be great for helis with retracts or servo driven doors etc. that need the scale look and operation speed. Not to mention with up to 12 channels available, lights, and a host of auxiliary options are limited only by your imagination. Going to the 12X is a step up in quality and programming that is not just about looks: It’s about functionality and results. I choose the 12X to fly all my helicopters and airplanes because of JR’s renown quality and programming features that are easy to use. I prefer to spend more time flying and less time setting up. I highly recommend the 12X to any heli pilot looking for a system that is big on features that matter and make every model easy to setup and flying more enjoyable. Sailplane Marc Gellart -Team JR Sailplane pilot, 2006 LSF Level V #121, 2006 OVSS Master Class Champion !!Marc Gellart OverviewI first saw a 12X 2.4 radio in the spring of 2008, and the minute I held it, I knew it was something special. The venerable JR 9303 radio had been my buddy for a good long time, but the 12X had a more solid feel and the gimbals felt like the sticks in an Extra 300, yeah, the real one. Yes, the base structure of the sailplane programming is the same as a 9303, and anyone that has set up one will fell at home when they crank up the 12X. Programming my first ship took about 20 minutes. The items in working with the radio that stood out to me in my brief time using the radio were:*Stick tension is adjustable outside the transmitter. The four main axes (yes, even the flap stick) are all accessible on the backside by easily removing the two hand pads on either side of the rear of the case. Minor, I know, but just nice to not have to remove the back face and take a chance of loosing screws, crushing wire, etc.*2000 mAh battery is standard. I know some like to have 8000 mAh batteries in their transmitters, but the standard battery will last an entire weekend of contesting. I put over three hours of flight time over a three-day weekend of combined fun flying and contesting with out touching a charger.*Great graphics in Device Select for locating switches. One thing in the 9303 that I thought was weak was when you assign switches to flight modes/mixes; there were times I was not sure that I was getting the switch I wanted. Not so with the 12X. When you are assigning the switches, each operation brings up a graphic that illustrates the transmitter and the switches that are available to you for what ever option you are contemplating using. You have no doubt which switch you are dealing with and what it can do for you.*Trailing edge management is very precise and easy to set up. Compared again to the 9303, setup is allowed per flight mode per each individual section of the trailing edge. The 9303 does not allow this. As in the 9303, you can tweak your set up on the face of the transmitter via two trim switches, one for the ailerons and one for the flaps.*More dual rate and exponential/flight modes combinations available. There are five possible flight modes and DR/EXPs that can be set up via switch or stick switch positions.*Rudder to spoiler mixing. On RES ships that are equipped with split spoilers with direct drive servos, they can be set up to have rudder mixed into their function to make more precise turning.*More multipoint mixes. These seven point mixes allow for very precise mixing such as Flap-Elevator. Since F-E is usually not a linear mix, a flier can set up the curve to their taste. You can also set up other mixes such as the aileron and flaps moving together for a portion of the flap stick throw and then diverging after a certain point to enable crow.*A transmitter that tells you where your servos are, JR calls this “Monitor”. There is two parts to this function: one that views what each individual servo is doing, and what direction it is traveling. This is nice when setting a ship. The second part is “Mix Monitor” that is viewing specifically the mixes you are using and what is happening with them specifically.*PCDATA transfer. A CDROM comes with the 12X that allows setups to be stored on a PC and set ups to be transferred via e-mail. I will be the first to admit, I probably am not nearly using all of the 12X’s capabilities at this point. I have had my transmitter since mid September, and I have three ships on it, two sailplanes, and one electric acro ship. !So how does the radio fit in the aluminum case?Install the dividers so the radio sits upright in the middle of the case with the antenna folded down to the side. They say a photo is worth a million words so here you go. If you have further questions about how to set up the case, you can see step by step how to configure it Horizon Hobby http://www.jrradios.com/ProdInfo/Files/12X-Case-mod_byDannyS.pdf Video:JR has a promotional video on their website that gives an overview of the features found on the 12X. You can watch it here. !Conclusion The JR 12X is built strong with its magnesium body. Quad bearing gimbals make the sticks smooth and precise. Programming is simple and straightforward, allowing for more time with the radio and less time with the manual. Whether you fly big, or small, airplanes, helicopters or sailplanes, the 12X has you covered. I would like to thank Dave Lockhart, Scott Gray and Marc Gellart for their contributions to this review. *Pluses:*Solid construction*50 model memory*2048 Resolution*Model match*Good written instructions*Availability of receivers for any size aircraft *Minuses:*No throttle stick ratcheting (Although I have gotten use to not having it)*If you run out of model memory, you may want to consider Model Aircraft Anonymous
